Dr. Tulia Ackson won the National Assembly Speaker election to lead the 12th Parliament succeeding Job Ndugai, who resigned on January 6, 2022.
She got a 100% win after getting a yes for all 376 casted votes against eight other candidates.
Before this position, Dr. Tulia was the Deputy speaker from 2015 until January this year.
Tulia (45) was first introduced to the public in 2014 when former president Jakaya Kikwete appointed her to join the Constituent Assembly of Tanzania, representing higher learning institutions.
In 2015 Kikwete appointed her to be the Deputy Attorney General. Two months later, in November, Late President John Magufuli was in power and appointed her a member of Parliament in the 10 presidential parliament seats.
Dr. Tulia Ackson is an advocate by profession. She has a law degree from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Master’s degree from the same university, a Bar Exam certificate for Legal Practice in Tanzania, and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University Cape Town. All this between 1998 and 2007.
She is the 7th Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania and the second woman to hold the position after Anne Makinda, who held the position from 2010 to 2015.
