2025 Elections: INEC Adds New Constituencies and Wards

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the creation of eight new parliamentary constituencies and five new wards, increasing the total number of constituencies for the 2025 General Election to 272 and wards to 3,960.

INEC Chairperson, Court of Appeal Judge Jacobs Mwambegele, said the changes are the outcome of a stakeholder consultation process conducted from 26 February to 2 March 2025. During this period, the Commission received 34 requests for constituency divisions and 10 proposals for name changes.

The Commission evaluated proposals based on four main criteria: population size (600,000 for urban areas, 400,000 for rural), Parliament’s seating capacity, the allocation of special seats for women MPs, and ensuring that no constituency crosses multiple local government authorities.

As a result, the following eight new constituencies have been approved:

Dar es Salaam Region: Ukonga split to create Kivule, and Mbagala divided to form Chamazi.

Dodoma Region: Dodoma Urban split to establish Mtumba.

Mbeya Region: Mbeya Urban divided to create Uyole.

Simiyu Region: Bariadi split to form Bariadi Urban.

Geita Region: Busanda divided to establish Katoro, and Chato split to create Chato South.

Shinyanga Region: Solwa divided to form Itwangi.

These adjustments aim to enhance representation and reflect shifting population dynamics ahead of the national polls.
