Since 2017 Tanzania has been laying bricks constructing a 13 billion shillings ultra-modern nuclear facility in the Arusha region that will be used to test and maintenance of sophisticated radiology equipment and tools.

The facility is expected to be completed by September 2022, and this info is according to the director of general of the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission, Prof Lazaro Busagara.

Prof. Lazaro confirmed that several staff members are being trained to operate the lab. The lab is located in Njiro suburb southeast of Arusha and will serve as the nuclear energy sector within East Africa.

In April 2018, the first phase of the lab was complete and inaugurated by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. The first phase will comprise four mini labs and nuclear security support dealing with X-rays, Fluorescence services, person monitoring dosimetry, standard dosimetry and a specific lab for the human body.

According to Prof Lazaro, the construction had reached 94% until last week, three months ahead of the work plan. Though nuclear tech is less familiar to people, it has a lot of importance on food preservation, medical treatment, power generation, and other services, said Prof. Lazaro.
