Tanzania has made notable progress in international press freedom rankings, climbing from 97th position in 2024 to 95th in 2025.
According to the latest report from Reporters Without Borders (RSF), released yesterday, while Tanzania’s ranking improved by two places, its overall score has slightly decreased from 54.80 in 2024 to 53.68 this year.
The annual report highlighted that the country’s upward movement in rankings is linked to the efforts made by the government and media stakeholders to improve the working environment for journalists and enhance press freedom.
Among the key initiatives contributing to this improvement are the revisions of media-related laws, particularly the 2016 Media Services Act. These reforms have aimed to eliminate restrictive clauses and create a more enabling environment for journalists to operate freely.
Additionally, enhanced communication between the government and media outlets through open dialogue platforms has played a vital role in building trust and increasing transparency in accessing information. This collaboration has further strengthened the relationship between the government and media entities, which has positively impacted Tanzania’s standing in the press freedom index.
Despite the small decline in the overall score, the country’s positive movement in rankings demonstrates Tanzania’s continued efforts to create a more conducive environment for media freedom.
