Joe Biden Diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer

Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, according to a statement from his personal office. The cancer, which has spread to the bone, was detected following additional medical tests after doctors found a prostate nodule.

Medical experts have assigned the cancer a Gleason score of 9, indicating a highly aggressive form. However, the cancer is hormone-sensitive, making it more responsive to treatment. Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” the statement noted.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men in the U.S. and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Biden left office in January after completing one term and had previously announced he would not seek re-election in 2024, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

A long-time advocate for cancer research, Biden launched the Cancer Moonshot initiative in 2016 following the death of his son Beau from brain cancer. As president, he revived the program, vowing to cut cancer death rates significantly.

“We can do this. I promise you, we can do this,” Biden said during a 2022 White House event. “All those we lost, all those we miss — we can end cancer as we know it.”

Former President Donald Trump extended his well wishes in a statement on Truth Social: “We are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
