Tanzania has been ranked the most peaceful country in East Africa, according to the 2025 Global Peace Index (GPI), securing 73rd place out of 163 countries globally. Despite this achievement, the country dropped eight positions from last year’s ranking, reflecting emerging challenges in maintaining domestic stability.
East Africa Peace Rankings (2025 GPI):
- Tanzania – 73
2. Rwanda – 91
3. Uganda – 113
4. Kenya – 127
5. Burundi – 133
6. DR Congo – 160
7. South Sudan – 161
The Global Peace Index, compiled annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), assesses levels of peace using 23 indicators, including societal safety, internal and external conflicts, and the degree of militarisation.
While Tanzania continues to lead the region in terms of peace and stability, the slip in its global position underscores the need to strengthen institutions and address emerging social and security issues. The country has traditionally been recognized for its peaceful political transitions and relatively low levels of conflict.
This year’s report also highlights a broader global trend: a decline in peacefulness for the 13th time in the past 17 years. East African nations, like many around the world, are facing increasing internal and geopolitical pressures that threaten their stability.
