Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya announces bid for eighth term

Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, currently the world’s oldest head of state at 92, has announced his intention to seek re-election in October, aiming to extend his 43-year rule.

“Rest assured that my determination to serve you matches the urgency of the challenges we face,” Biya stated in a message posted on X.

He said the decision to run for an eighth term followed “numerous and insistent” appeals from citizens across all regions of Cameroon and from the diaspora.

Biya’s long-standing administration has faced growing criticism over widespread corruption, embezzlement of public funds, poor governance, and persistent security challenges. Additionally, concerns about his health and capacity to continue governing have sparked debate both within and outside the country.
