Dar es Salaam Port, now managed by DP World, has delivered record-breaking performance in 2025, showcasing Tanzania’s growing role as East Africa’s gateway for trade and logistics.
In July, the port achieved its highest monthly performance ever, handling 29,665 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers, nearly 15,000 roll-on/roll-off (RORO) vehicles, 381,000 tonnes of dry bulk, and 158,000 tonnes of general cargo. The growth continued in August, with container traffic rising to 34,183 TEUs, RORO units climbing to 21,237, dry bulk reaching 446,608 tonnes, and general cargo surging to 231,000 tonnes. These figures set new records across every major cargo category.
Year-to-date comparisons between January and August 2025 and the same period in 2024 highlight remarkable growth. Container volumes increased by 59 percent, general cargo by 39 percent, dry bulk by 26 percent, and RORO units by 9 percent. This expansion reflects a strong upward trend in Tanzania’s trade capacity and efficiency.
Analysts attribute this performance to a combination of improved operational efficiency, expanded port capacity, and strong institutional support from the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC). These efforts have not only boosted cargo handling but also positioned Tanzania as a reliable logistics hub in the region.
The achievements at Dar es Salaam Port are expected to create a ripple effect throughout the Tanzanian economy. By improving trade flows, reducing congestion, and attracting new investment, the port is reinforcing the country’s ambition to become a regional logistics powerhouse.
With rising volumes and growing efficiency, Dar es Salaam Port is proving its strategic importance in regional trade and its vital role in driving Tanzania’s economic growth.
