The Tanzanian government has confirmed it is moving ahead with initial steps to construct a permanent bridge connecting Negero Village in Kilindi District, Tanga Region, aimed at improving infrastructure and boosting the local economy.
Responding to a question from Kilindi MP Omar Mohamed Kigua, Deputy Minister in the President’s Office – TAMISEMI, Zainab Katimba, said the bridge design has been completed at a cost of TSh 70 million and was finalized in March 2025.
“The government recognizes the importance of this bridge for the development of Negero residents. We are currently reviewing the design report to determine the exact construction cost. Once that is done, funds will be requested to begin construction,” Katimba told Parliament in Dodoma.
Currently, residents use a 100-meter pedestrian suspension bridge built in December 2021 at a cost of TSh 66.68 million to cross the Negero River.
Katimba added that the government remains committed to improving rural road and bridge infrastructure to ease transportation and create more economic opportunities.
