The High Court has ordered full protection measures for civilian witnesses set to testify in the treason case against Tundu Lissu, the Chairman of the opposition party Chadema.
In a ruling delivered earlier yesterday by Judge Hussein Mtembwa, the court directed that the identities of the witnesses be kept confidential. They will be allowed to testify anonymously, with all personal details withheld — including any information that could reveal their identities or link them to their families, friends, or close associates.
The decision follows an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who argued for enhanced security measures for the witnesses involved.
Additionally, the court imposed a strict ban on the publication, dissemination, or broadcast of any information related to the protected witnesses by media outlets, unless prior approval is granted by the court.
Lissu was arrested on April 9, 2025, during a Chadema rally in Mbinga. He was subsequently transferred to Dar es Salaam and formally charged with treason on April 10.
