Hosea Backs Tanzania Inquiry Commission as Key to National Reconciliation

Tanzanians are being encouraged to support a domestically led commission of inquiry established to investigate events surrounding the October 2025 general elections, with legal expert Dr Edward Hosea describing it as a key step towards national unity and stability.

The former Tanganyika Law Society president said the commission, chaired by retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman, represents an effort by the country to resolve its challenges internally rather than relying on external intervention.

He described the body as a “bridge” towards dialogue and reconciliation, warning that without such a mechanism, Tanzania risked prolonged uncertainty and deeper divisions.

According to Dr Hosea, the formation of the commission has already helped ease tensions and restore a degree of public confidence, as citizens await its findings and recommendations.

The commission was set up following political tensions linked to the October 29, 2025 elections and has been tasked with examining the causes and impact of the unrest, as well as proposing measures to prevent future occurrences.

Supporters argue that the initiative demonstrates Tanzania’s capacity to address its own political challenges, even as international actors such as the Commonwealth and United Nations continue to show interest in the situation.

Officials and analysts say the outcome of the inquiry could play a significant role in shaping future dialogue, governance reforms, and long-term political stability in the country.
