IMF approves $448m in fresh funding for Tanzania’s economic reforms

Tanzania has secured a major financial boost after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved key programme reviews, unlocking new funding worth approximately $448.4 million (about TSh1.17 trillion).

In a statement released on Friday, 27 June, the IMF confirmed the completion of its 2025 Article IV Consultation, along with the fifth review under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and the second review under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

The decision paves the way for the immediate disbursement of $155.7 million (around TSh406.4 billion) under the ECF and $292.7 million (roughly TSh763.9 billion) under the RSF. This brings Tanzania’s total access under both financing programmes to more than $1.25 billion (over TSh3.26 trillion).

The IMF praised Tanzania’s economic trajectory, noting that real GDP grew by 5.5% in 2024 and is forecast to reach 6.0% in 2025. Over the medium term, growth is projected to average 6.5%.

The Fund also commended the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, structural reforms, and climate resilience efforts.

The disbursement is expected to support Tanzania’s ongoing efforts to reduce poverty, enhance economic governance, and build resilience to climate-related shocks—while fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
