Increased contribution to GDP
The mining sector’s contribution to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached 9.1% in 2022, demonstrating its vital role in the national economy (from 6.7% in 2020).
Strong growth
The sector also experienced significant growth, reaching 10.9% in 2022. This positive trend indicates the sector’s resilience and potential for further development.
Booming exports
The value of minerals exported abroad reached a staggering $3.4 billion in 2022, representing 56% of total exports. This highlights the mining sector’s importance in generating foreign exchange for the country.
Increased government non-tax revenue
Government non-tax revenue collection from the mining sector amounted to TZS 678 billion in the 2022/23 fiscal year, demonstrating its substantial contribution to public finances.
Tax revenue growth
Tax revenue generated from mining activities reached TZS 808.9 billion in the 2022/23 fiscal year, further emphasising the sector’s impact on government income.
Vision for the future: Mining as the engine of development
The Ministry of Minerals is committed to working closely with the newly-appointed team of experts under the leadership of Prof. Kitila Mkumbo, Minister in the President’s Office ( Planning and Investment), to prepare and implement the National Development Vision for 2050.
The ministry firmly believes that the mining sector will be the driving force behind national development and contribute significantly to economic prosperity.
Ambitious goals for the future
Tanzania aspires to become a leader and hub in strategic minerals on the African continent.
Gemstone dominance
The country also aims to solidify its position as Africa’s leading producer and exporter of gemstones.
Integrated sector development
The ministry plans to integrate the mining sector with all other sectors within the national economy, creating a synergistic and mutually beneficial relationship.
Collaboration for sustainable growth
The Ministry of Minerals acknowledges the importance of collaboration with stakeholders within Tanzania and internationally to achieve sustainable growth in the mining sector.
This collaborative approach will ensure responsible resource management, environmental protection, and equitable distribution of benefits for all Tanzanians.
