Kikwete Meets Commonwealth Special Envoy to Advance Political Reconciliation Efforts

Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, has held talks with former Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera in Dar es Salaam, aimed at strengthening political reconciliation efforts in the country.

Dr. Chakwera is currently in Tanzania on an official assignment as a Special Envoy of the Commonwealth, under the leadership of Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey. He arrived on April 8, 2026, tasked with supporting diplomatic efforts to ease political tensions following the October 29, 2025 general elections.

During his visit, Dr. Chakwera has engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including government leaders, political parties, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and members of the diplomatic community.

He also met with President Samia Suluhu Hassan to discuss pathways toward inclusive national dialogue, governance reforms, and long-term political stability.

The visit forms part of the Commonwealth’s “Good Offices” initiative, which promotes quiet diplomacy and peaceful resolution of political challenges among member states.
