Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, former Mali president, died on January 16, 2022, at his home in Bamako at 76.
Keïta served as Mali’s president from 2013 until 2020, when the military overthrew him.
“President IBK (Ibrahim Boubacar Keita) died this morning at 9 am (GMT and local) at his home in Bamako,” a family member told AFP.
He served as prime minister from 1994 up until 2000. In 2002 Keïta ran for the presidency and lost to general Moussa Traore. He ran again in 2013 and won.
Keïta ruled Mali for one full term in 2013. In 2018 he was re-elected for his second term, which was cut short by the coup.
After Keïta was ousted, an interim government was set to rule for 18 months. But the military also overthrew that government last year.
