A new government-owned ferry, MV Bukondo, was launched on September 16, 2025, in Ukerewe District, Mwanza Region, to enhance transport across Lake Victoria’s islands. Built at the Songoro Marine Workshop in Ilemela at a cost of nearly TZS 28 billion, the vessel is one of five ferries under construction to ease marine transport challenges.
Speaking during the launch, Mwanza Regional Commissioner Said Mtanda thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for funding the project, stressing that marine transport remains a top priority since more than half of Mwanza Region is covered by Lake Victoria. He assured residents that the remaining ferries are in their final stages and that more projects are planned to meet growing demand.
Chama Cha Mapinduzi’s Mwanza Regional Chairperson Michael Lushinge praised the initiative, calling it a milestone in solving transport woes for island communities. He also highlighted the importance of engaging local contractors, noting the positive impact on domestic currency circulation.
According to TEMESA Operations Director Eng. Lukombe King’ombe, MV Bukondo has a capacity of 200 passengers, 10 vehicles, or 100 tons of cargo, and will operate between Bwiro and Bukombe islands.
Songoro Marine Limited Director Meja Songoro expressed pride in the government’s trust in local contractors, pledging quality and timely project delivery.
