Nigerian nationals travelling to Tanzania will no longer be required to obtain special immigration clearance before receiving a visa after the Immigration Services Department removed Nigeria from the list of countries subject to the referral visa requirement.

According to the department, the change was made under Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026 and took effect immediately.

The move allows Nigerian travellers to apply for Tanzanian visas through the immigration online portal or at designated entry points without going through the additional approval process that was previously required.

Under the referral visa system, applicants had to submit their requests in advance and wait for immigration approval before travelling, with travellers advised to begin the process at least two months before their intended journey.

The change was announced in a public notice issued on September 25, 2026, and signed by the Chief Spokesperson of the Immigration Services Department, Paul Mselle.
