President Samia named Africa’s top leader in promoting clean cooking energy

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been recognized as the top leader in Africa for promoting clean cooking energy. The honor was given by Energy and Water Ministers from eight Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states during a regional meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, focused on enhancing cooperation in energy and water sectors and advancing sustainable development goals.

Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to support clean cooking initiatives through public education and awareness, aligning with the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy (2024–2034). She urged SADC members to work together on strong implementation strategies and to embrace innovations like environmentally friendly briquettes as alternatives to traditional charcoal.

Kapinga also emphasized the importance of making clean cooking solutions affordable and accessible while calling for increased advocacy and education across the region. Tanzania was further praised for hosting the recent Africa Energy Leaders Summit (Mission 300 – M300) in Dar es Salaam, with Malawi’s Energy Minister, Ibrahim Matola, commending President Samia’s leadership as a model for others in the region.

The SADC meeting in Harare continues, with member states expected to adopt resolutions that support clean energy and water development across Southern Africa.
