Tanzania and China Honor Fallen Workers Behind Historic TAZARA Railway.

Tanzania and China have jointly commemorated Chinese experts who lost their lives during the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA), marking both remembrance and the enduring partnership between the two nations. The ceremony took place in Dar es Salaam during the Qingming Festival, a traditional Chinese day of honoring the deceased.

Leaders and representatives from both countries gathered at the Chinese Experts Cemetery, where wreaths were laid in tribute to the workers who died while building the railway in the 1970s. More than 50,000 Chinese workers participated in the project, with about 70 losing their lives during construction.

Officials described the TAZARA railway as more than just infrastructure, highlighting it as a symbol of solidarity and cooperation among developing nations. Tanzanian leaders emphasized that the project continues to represent mutual respect and shared development goals between China and Africa.

The railway remains a vital economic link, supporting trade and transport across the region while carrying historical significance for both Tanzania and Zambia. It played a crucial role during the early years of independence, particularly for landlocked Zambia, by providing access to the port of Dar es Salaam.

As part of ongoing efforts, Tanzania, China, and Zambia have agreed to revitalize the railway, ensuring that it continues to serve future generations while honoring the sacrifices of those who built it.
