Tanzania approves pension payments for Kagera War veterans after 45 years

The Tanzanian government has officially approved pension payments for all veterans who participated in the 1979 Kagera War, marking a significant step in addressing their long-standing grievances. The announcement was made on June 23, 2025, during a parliamentary session in Dodoma.

Minister of Defence and National Service, Dr. Stergomena Tax, revealed the decision while presenting her ministry’s budget. She stated that the government will begin issuing pension payments starting July 2026, fulfilling a promise made by the Sixth Phase Government to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s war heroes.

“The Ministry submitted proposals to the government, and I am pleased to inform this Honourable House that the Sixth Phase Government has heard the long-standing cries of the veterans who fought in the Kagera War,” said Dr. Tax. “All veterans will begin receiving pensions at the minimum level equivalent to that paid to soldiers in the Tanzania People’s Defence Force.”

She added that the pension amounts will be gradually increased based on the availability of government funds, ensuring that veterans eventually receive more dignified and fair benefits.

Dr. Tax also acknowledged the role of Members of Parliament in advocating for the rights of Kagera War veterans. She praised their persistence and unity in pushing for justice over the years.

The Kagera War, fought between Tanzania and the regime of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, ended in 1979. Despite their crucial role in securing the country’s sovereignty, many veterans have gone without formal recognition or financial support for decades.

This latest decision is seen as a historic milestone, reflecting the government’s commitment to honoring its servicemen and women. It also represents a broader effort to correct historical injustices and improve the welfare of those who risked their lives for the nation.
