The Tanzanian government is ramping up efforts to revive and strengthen the national carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), with continued investment in aircraft acquisition, Transport Minister Professor Makame Mbarawa announced on May 15, 2025, while presenting the ministry’s 2025/26 budget estimates in Parliament.
Prof Mbarawa reported that seven new aircraft have been procured since President Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office, raising the total number of new additions to the ATCL fleet to 15, including one cargo aircraft. These investments have helped the airline expand its service network to 27 destinations, up from 23 in March 2021.
“These strategic purchases are part of the government’s broader plan to enhance ATCL’s competitiveness and strengthen Tanzania’s air transport infrastructure,” Prof Mbarawa stated.
He emphasized that the government’s continued backing of the national airline demonstrates its commitment to improving transport services, supporting ATCL’s commercial viability, and integrating the country more fully into regional and global air networks.
The minister also highlighted the wider economic impact of the airline’s growing reach, noting that increased connectivity is expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade, and drive economic growth across the country.
