Tanzania is taking a leading role in advancing a major cross-border electrified railway project alongside Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, aimed at transforming trade and transport across East and Central Africa.
The proposed Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will link key cities including Uvinza, Musongati, Gitega, Bujumbura, Uvira, and Kindu, creating a strategic corridor that connects inland economies directly to the port of Dar es Salaam.
Officials from the three countries have already reviewed progress on feasibility studies and preliminary engineering work, reaffirming their commitment to fast-track the project. The railway is expected to significantly reduce transport costs, improve the movement of goods and people, and strengthen regional integration.
Beyond logistics, the electrified system supports sustainable development by offering a cleaner alternative to road transport, lowering emissions while improving efficiency. The project is also seen as a catalyst for economic growth, unlocking trade potential for landlocked regions and enhancing Tanzania’s position as a key regional trade gateway.
As development progresses, the initiative highlights Tanzania’s broader infrastructure strategy—using large-scale, modern transport systems to drive economic expansion, regional connectivity, and long-term competitiveness across Africa.
