President Samia Suluhu Hassan has officially launched the Mkuju River Uranium Project (MRP) in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma, marking Tanzania’s entry into the global uranium market. Operated by Mantra Tanzania Ltd, a subsidiary of Russia’s Rosatom, the $400 million project is the country’s first large-scale uranium mine.
President Samia hailed the project as a major step toward industrialization, energy diversification, and economic growth. “This reflects our commitment to using natural resources responsibly for sustainable development,” she said.

The mine is expected to generate over 1,500 direct jobs and significantly boost national revenue when full production begins in 2026. It positions Tanzania to become Africa’s third-largest uranium producer, after Niger and Namibia.
Addressing environmental concerns, especially due to the mine’s proximity to the Selous Game Reserve, the President assured that strict international safety and environmental standards are in place, including oversight by NEMC, TAEC, and adherence to IAEA guidelines.
The Mkuju River Project marks a key step in Tanzania’s journey toward a more resilient and resource-driven economy.
