Tanzania has emerged as the most peaceful country in the East African Community (EAC), ranking 65th globally out of 163 nations in the 2024 Global Peace Index (GPI). It is also seventh among sub-Saharan African countries.
This marks a notable rise of 11 places from 2023, with Tanzania scoring 1.987 and placing in the “medium” peacefulness category. The ranking, compiled by the Institute for Economics and Peace, evaluates nations across societal safety, conflict levels and militarisation.
Tanzania’s strong performance contrasts sharply with its neighbours. South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are among the world’s least peaceful countries, ranking at the bottom of the Safety and Security domain.
South Sudan is last globally (163rd), reflecting deep insecurity, ongoing violence and a stalled peace process. The DRC, though showing slight improvement, remains highly unstable with persistent conflict and violence.
Tanzania’s relative calm highlights its role as a stabilising force in a region facing major security challenges. Its political stability, internal conflict management and diplomatic efforts are key factors in its peaceful standing.
