Tanzania plans to increase budget to upgrade road network

Tanzania’s government says it will increase funding to improve and expand the country’s road network, as part of efforts to strengthen infrastructure and support economic growth.

Officials told parliament that the plan includes boosting the budget for the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA), with a focus on accelerating the construction of asphalt roads across both urban and rural areas.

The government highlighted recent increases in funding as an example of its approach. In Kigoma-Ujiji Municipality, the annual budget for road and bridge maintenance has doubled from about TZS 1.6 billion in 2020/21 to TZS 3.2 billion in recent years.

Authorities say the expanded investment will improve transport and connectivity, making it easier for people and goods to move while opening up business opportunities and improving access to services.

The funding increase is also linked to ongoing projects supported by development partners, including the World Bank-backed TACTIC programme, which is helping finance road construction and drainage systems in key areas.

Officials argue that strengthening road infrastructure remains central to Tanzania’s development strategy, with better connectivity expected to boost trade, reduce travel time, and support economic activity across the country.
