Tanzania positions itself as a strategic player in global helium supply

Tanzania is emerging as a potential key supplier in the global helium market, as new discoveries in the southwest of the country draw increasing attention from investors and industry players.

Helium—an essential gas used in sectors such as medical imaging, aerospace, and electronics—is in growing demand globally, with supply currently concentrated in a few countries. Tanzania’s reserves are now being seen as a strategic opportunity to diversify that supply.

Exploration efforts, particularly in the Rukwa Basin, have revealed high concentrations of helium, raising prospects for commercial production and positioning the country within a critical global supply chain.

Officials and analysts say the development could open a new frontier for Tanzania’s mining sector, adding to its portfolio of strategic minerals and supporting long-term economic growth.

If successfully developed, Tanzania could play a significant role in stabilising global helium supply, while attracting investment and advancing its ambitions to become a major player in high-value resource markets.
