The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has voiced its disappointment over a recent resolution passed by the European Union (EU) Parliament concerning the case of opposition figure Tundu Lissu, criticizing the move as based on one-sided information and lacking prior diplomatic engagement.
In an official statement released on May 8, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation reaffirmed Tanzania’s status as a sovereign nation governed by the rule of law. The statement emphasized that all legal matters are handled independently by the judiciary, without interference from political institutions.
The government further underscored the significant political and legal reforms initiated since March 2021, guided by the national philosophy of the 4Rs—Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding. These efforts, the ministry noted, have led to substantial progress in restoring political freedoms, expanding civil rights, improving press freedom, and establishing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2024 to ensure fair and credible elections.
Tanzania called on its international partners, including the EU, to engage through diplomatic dialogue and mutual respect, rather than through resolutions that overlook local context and progress made on governance and democratic reform.
