In his budget address on May 26, 2025, in Dodoma, Home Affairs Minister Innocent Bashungwa announced sweeping reforms to modernize Tanzania’s security sector, including a $145 million Safe Cities Project that will see over 4,100 CCTV cameras installed in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Arusha, and other major cities.
The minister also revealed the launch of a Sh50.95 billion Highway Patrol Project aimed at digitally monitoring roads to improve safety and cut down on traffic accidents. Police forces have been equipped with hundreds of new vehicles, motorcycles, and thousands of communication devices to enhance rapid response.
To support officers’ welfare, Sh2.7 billion has been allocated for medical aid and compensation. Community policing initiatives have also expanded, reaching millions with programs on gender-based violence and youth empowerment.
Bashungwa said the reforms are key to ensuring a secure environment for the upcoming elections and promoting long-term peace and public trust.
