Tanzania’s lion population reaches 17,000, the largest in the world.

Tanzania’s lion population has risen to around 17,000, making it the largest concentration of lions globally, according to government officials.

The figure was announced by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Hassan Abbasi, during discussions with a visiting delegation from Uganda focused on wildlife conservation and tourism cooperation.

Officials say the increase reflects sustained conservation efforts, including stronger anti-poaching measures and improved protection of wildlife habitats. These efforts have contributed to a steady recovery of lion populations in recent years.

The talks between the two countries also formed part of a broader knowledge-sharing initiative aimed at tackling illegal wildlife trade and strengthening conservation strategies across the region.

Tanzania is widely regarded as a key stronghold for lions, with major ecosystems such as the Serengeti National Park hosting some of the largest populations on the continent.

Officials say continued regional cooperation and investment in conservation will be critical to maintaining wildlife populations while supporting tourism and sustainable development.
