UDART Launches First CNG Bus in Dar es Salaam to Cut Costs and Boost Commuter Comfort

In a major move toward greener and more cost-effective public transportation, the Dar Rapid Transit Agency (UDART) has unveiled its first-ever bus powered by compressed natural gas (CNG). This launch marks the beginning of a larger initiative, with 100 CNG buses expected to arrive in Tanzania by August 2025.

The milestone was announced at the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) mother station, where UDART Director Waziri Kindamba highlighted the project as a critical solution to improving urban transit efficiency and affordability.

“This first bus will operate on a trial basis before the rest of the fleet is rolled out. Beginning Monday, it will serve the Morocco–Kivukoni route, and all UDART cardholders will be able to ride for free during the trial week,” said Mr. Kindamba.

Designed to carry up to 155 passengers, the bus features air conditioning and onboard mobile phone charging ports, offering a more comfortable experience for daily commuters.

“Passengers won’t have to suffer through Dar’s heat anymore, and if anyone forgets to charge their phone at home, they’ll be able to do it right on the bus,” he added.

This initiative not only aligns with Tanzania’s efforts to adopt cleaner energy solutions but also aims to enhance the quality and reliability of public transport services in Dar es Salaam.
