The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan applauded Twiga Stars for coming on top in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Cup as they presented the trophy at Ikulu, Dar es Salaam today, October 27, 2021.
President Samia urged sports boards to be fair when dealing with players regardless of their gender and be more considerate to the women’s team which has been holding the country’s flag up high.
During her speech at the ceremony she reminded the public of the time when Taifa Stars (Tanzania National Football Team) were gifted houses by football directors for getting into the semi-finals but the women’s team was not treated with the same honour even though they came out 1st in COSAFA.
“I will give my children [Twiga Stars] plots to build their houses. Unfortunately or fortunately all the plots are in Dodoma, where ‘I’ your mother stays. I know for some of you it will be hard to build in Dodoma, but first accept the plots, we will figure out what to do in the future,” said President Samia at the gathering.
President Samia reminded the public that the players future is of concern as the sport requires physical strength and as they age their bodies will weaken and when that time comes, they can no longer perform as they do now and they should be able to have a home of their own.
The president urged players to not slack, rather the presents should motivate them to do even better in their coming games.
Adding into the excitement the President shared news on FIFA’s inquiry about women’s football in Tanzania.
“I have information that even the Football Association of the World (FIFA) has started asking about a program to run women’s football in Tanzania. If it is true then, what you did my children [Twiga Stars] in South Africa, is being noticed. The world’s famous teams will start observing you. Build, maintain discipline, it is the key to your success. ” – President Samia Suluhu Hassan
So far the country has 11 trophies, five of them are from the female teams.
