A syndicate of law firms, local opposition politicians and RAID (a UK-based NGO) are accused of syphoning millions of Pounds from hundreds of Tanzania citizens who they represented in settlement cases against mining companies from January 2015.
Settlement documents seen by Taifa Daily reveal several injustices where in one case, a local Tanzania claimant received less than 30% of what was awarded by the court. The syndicate led by a UK based law firm accounted the remaining 70% to “legal fees and success fees”.
Several citizens interviewed in Nyamongo accuse RAID and the entire syndicate for using their cases for their own advantage. RAID is not registered in Tanzania (as the law requires for it to operate).
Legal experts in Tanzania are pointing out that such syndicates is an industry in itself. Taifa Daily is making a thorough follow-up to bring more updates on this developing story.
