Africa’s most affected country by COVID-19, South Africa has announced that the country is currently under another Covid variant attack.
Speaking at an emergency news conference the country’s virologist, Tulio de Oliveira said that the variant has a high mutation level compared to the other variants.
“Unfortunately we have detected a new variant, which is a reason for concern in South Africa,” he added.
According to The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) so far 22 positive cases of the new variant which goes by the label B.1.1.529 have been recorded.
The news of the new variant went viral and some countries have started to react to prevent the spread of this variant to their countries.
The United Kingdom (UK) will temporarily ban flights from Southern Africa who are in close proximity to South Africa including Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini and Namibia.
