BoT: Excess money in circulation drives up prices

Printing excessive amounts of money increases the amount of money circulating in the economy, potentially leading to higher spending and increased demand for goods and services. When demand rises faster than production capacity and the availability of goods in the market, prices may increase, causing inflation and reducing consumers’ purchasing power.

This was stated on October 12, 2026, by Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Economic Manager in Mwanza, Issa Pagali, during a conference organised by the Media Institute of Southern Africa Tanzania (MISA Tanzania), in collaboration with public and private institutions, to discuss accelerating economic growth. The conference was held in Mwanza.

Meanwhile, BoT Assistant Manager in Mwanza, Stanley Nderingo, said the bank had purchased 35 tonnes of gold by June 2026 to strengthen the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
