The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has announced plans to phase out airtime scratch cards as part of efforts to promote the use of digital platforms.
TCRA said the move will help reduce the production, distribution and disposal of airtime scratch cards and their environmental impact, while supporting the development of a more efficient and technology-driven communications sector.
The authority added that a pilot phase will begin on January 1, 2027, following a public awareness campaign that started on October 1, 2026.
The pilot programme will be conducted in Dar es Salaam; Dodoma Region (Dodoma City, Chamwino, Kondoa Urban and Kongwa); Arusha Region (Arusha City, Arusha District, Meru and Karatu); Mwanza Region (Nyamagana, Ilemela and Misungwi); and Mbeya Region (Mbeya City, Mbeya District and Mbarali).
