Chande Commission Team Revealed as Tanzania Submits Inquiry Report

Tanzania’s commission of inquiry into the 2025 election-related unrest has submitted its report, bringing renewed attention to the team behind the process and the expertise shaping its findings.

The commission is led by retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman and includes a group of senior figures drawn from the judiciary, security services, diplomacy, and regional institutions. Analysts say this mix of backgrounds is intended to strengthen both the credibility of the inquiry and public confidence in its conclusions.

Members of the team include former Chief Justice Ibrahim Juma, former Chief Secretary Ombeni Sefue, diplomat Radhia Msuya, retired military officer Paul Meela, former Inspector General of Police Said Mwema, diplomat David Kapya, and former SADC Executive Secretary Stergomena Tax.

At the centre of the commission is Chande Othman, who previously served as Chief Justice between 2010 and 2017 and has also held roles in international justice mechanisms. His legal background is seen as providing the commission with strong institutional experience and judicial grounding.

The inclusion of senior figures from security and diplomatic fields reflects an effort to address both the legal and political dimensions of the unrest, while also drawing on regional and international perspectives.

The commission was tasked with investigating the causes and impact of tensions linked to the October 2025 general elections, and its report is expected to influence future reforms, dialogue, and political stability in the country.
