The government has announced plans to build a new market for small-scale traders (machinga) in the Kigogo Sambusa area to ease congestion and address long-standing challenges facing traders at Kariakoo Market.
Speaking today during a joint meeting with Kariakoo traders, machinga representatives and Dar es Salaam regional leaders, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, said the move aims to provide immediate relief to traders and improve the business environment in Kariakoo as the government continues plans to complete the major permanent market project linked to the development of the Msimbazi Valley.
“The government’s goal is to reduce congestion in Kariakoo. Construction of the embankment in the Kigogo Sambusa area will begin immediately, and once it is completed, the Ilala City Council will begin construction of the market. We want the area to be ready so that machinga traders can relocate there and conduct their businesses peacefully,” Prof. Shemdoe emphasized.
Prof. Shemdoe said the market project will be financed through 5% of the Ilala City Council’s internally generated revenue. He also expressed his gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving the use of the protected 5% allocation of local revenue to improve business infrastructure, including the construction of markets.
