The Medical Stores Department (MSD) has imported the first shipment of Naltrexone, a medication used in the treatment of alcohol addiction, in a move aimed at improving access to care for people struggling with alcohol dependence.

The drug was procured through a partnership between MSD and the Mirembe National Mental Health Institute as part of efforts to strengthen the availability of health products used in managing alcohol addiction in Tanzania.

According to a statement issued by MSD Communications Manager Etty Kusiluka on September 23, 2026, the distribution and coordination of Naltrexone will be overseen by the Mirembe National Mental Health Institute.

She said MSD will continue procuring the medication for the institute to ensure a steady supply for patients in need of treatment.

Naltrexone is among the medicines used to treat alcohol addiction and can help reduce the urge to drink in some patients when combined with counselling and other medical support services.
