Mtwara Port Readiness Boosts Momentum for Tanzania’s $42 Billion LNG Project.

Tanzania’s plans to develop its multi-billion-dollar liquefied natural gas (LNG) project are gaining momentum, as international energy firm Equinor assesses the country’s infrastructure readiness—particularly the strategic role of Mtwara Port.

A joint delegation from Equinor and the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) recently visited key service providers to evaluate their capacity to support the project. The focus was on ensuring that logistics systems are fully prepared to handle the scale and complexity of the upcoming investment.

At the center of the assessment was Mtwara Port, which is expected to serve as a major logistics hub for the LNG project in the southern regions of Lindi and Mtwara. Officials highlighted significant upgrades, including improved cargo handling infrastructure, enhanced operational efficiency, and the introduction of modern technologies to meet international standards.

Port authorities confirmed that these improvements have significantly strengthened the facility’s ability to manage large volumes of specialized cargo required for major energy projects. They also assured investors of the port’s readiness to deliver efficient and high-quality services once the project moves into the implementation phase.

The LNG project, estimated at $42 billion, is one of Tanzania’s most ambitious energy developments. It aims to unlock vast offshore natural gas reserves and position the country as a key exporter of liquefied natural gas in the region and beyond.

However, the project has remained in the negotiation phase for years due to complex discussions over fiscal terms and agreements between the government and international investors. Ongoing talks are expected to pave the way for a final investment decision that will trigger construction.

Overall, the latest developments signal renewed progress, with infrastructure readiness and stakeholder engagement playing a critical role in advancing one of Tanzania’s most strategic energy projects.
