It should be known that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The 13th day of this month has been chosen as the ‘No Bra Day’ to promote breast cancer awareness to the community.
Women are encouraged not to wear a bra on this day, to remind the community that breast cancer is a fatal disease. The day is used to encourage people to do breast screening by self-examining or visit a health facility that offers screening.
What are the early signs of breast cancer? According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these are the symptoms of breast cancer;
· New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).
· Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.
· Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.
· Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.
· Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.
· Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.
· Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
· Pain in any area of the breast.
Treatment includes Surgery, medical procedure such as radiation and medications.
Globally 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 and 685 000 deaths recorded. Even though lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths, breast cancer patients 11.7% have surpassed the lung cancer victims at 11.4%
