Tanzania and DR Congo step up cross-border trade push.

Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have renewed efforts to deepen economic cooperation, in a move aimed at boosting trade, investment and private sector activity between the two countries.

Officials say the initiative seeks to reduce barriers to commerce, improve market access and strengthen supply chains, as both countries position themselves as key players in regional economic integration across East and Central Africa.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, the Director General of Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade), Dr Latifa Khamis, said Tanzania is ready to act as a strategic gateway for Congolese businesses.

“TanTrade remains a bridge for trade. We welcome businesspeople from the DRC to explore opportunities in Tanzania,” she said, adding that efforts are under way to improve transport services and expand trade in industrial and agricultural goods.

The renewed engagement follows discussions at the Lake Tanganyika Trade Conference, where stakeholders identified Kigoma as a critical link for trade with eastern DRC. The region already serves as a key transit point, particularly via lake transport routes.

On the Congolese side, South Kivu Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi Sadiki called on Tanzanian investors to explore opportunities across sectors, pledging a supportive business environment.

“There are many investment opportunities in the DRC. Our government will continue to ensure a safe environment for investors,” he said.

He also urged greater participation in upcoming trade events, including the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair in 2026, as a way of strengthening commercial ties.

Despite concerns over security in parts of eastern DRC, officials emphasised that business opportunities remain significant. “It is safer than often portrayed,” Prof Sadiki said, encouraging Tanzanian traders to take advantage of geographic proximity and cultural ties.

Industry players have welcomed the renewed push. The Tanzania Freight Forwarders Association said improved logistics—particularly through Kigoma—could further ease the movement of goods between the Port of Dar es Salaam and eastern Congo.

Plans are also being discussed to develop a dry port in Kigoma to streamline cargo handling before goods are transported across Lake Tanganyika.

Analysts say stronger trade links between Tanzania and the DRC could unlock new growth opportunities, particularly as demand rises for efficient regional transport corridors and integrated markets.
