Tanzania Expands Rural Connectivity with 133 New Telecom Sites

Tanzania has taken another major step in expanding digital access, following the completion of 133 new telecommunications sites under the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCSAF) programme. The rollout is part of a broader government effort to extend network coverage to rural and underserved communities.

The project, delivered in partnership with Helios Towers, aims to bridge the digital divide by bringing reliable mobile and internet services to areas that previously had limited or no connectivity. These sites have also been upgraded with 3G and 4G technology to ensure faster and more stable communication services.

The expansion is expected to unlock new opportunities for millions of Tanzanians by improving access to essential services such as mobile banking, digital education, healthcare information, and e-government platforms. This reflects the growing role of connectivity in driving socio-economic development.

Helios Towers, which has invested over $500 million in Tanzania, now operates more than 4,200 sites nationwide, with nearly half located in rural areas. The company’s infrastructure currently supports connectivity for over 46 million people across the country.

Overall, the milestone highlights Tanzania’s continued push to strengthen digital infrastructure, ensuring that more communities are connected and able to participate in the country’s expanding digital economy.
