Webometrics Ranking of World Universities released its 2021 top universities rankings featuring over 10,000 universities across the world and top 100 universities in Africa.
The universities were ranked in terms of their academic excellence, openness, impact, and other related fields. Tanzania universities did not make it to the top 1000 universities worldwide as the top Tanzania university started in 1931.
Based on the continental ranking here are the top 10 universities in Tanzania and their ranks;
1. University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)- 42
2. Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA)- 51
3. Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS)- 91
4. University of Dodoma (UDOM)- 174
5. Mzumbe University (MU)- 203
6. Catholic University Of Health And Allied Sciences (CUHAS)- 219
6. The Open University Of Tanzania (OUT)- 249
7. The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA)- 256
8. Ardhi University Tanzania (AUT) – 265
9. The Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM -AIST)- 280

The ranks are done based on webometric “(all missions) and bibliometric (research mission) indicators… to promote Open Access to the knowledge generated by the University.”
Webometrics ranking suggests that “the best strategy to improve your rank is to increase quantity and quality of your web contents.”
