World Bank Approves TZS 1.4 Trillion to Boost Education and Social Support in Tanzania.

Tanzania has secured $550 million (about TZS 1.4 trillion) from the World Bank to fund key development programmes focused on education and social protection. The funding reinforces the country’s ongoing partnership with the global financial institution.

Out of the total package, $300 million will go toward education, particularly targeting youth skills development to better prepare young Tanzanians for the job market. The remaining $250 million will support vulnerable households through the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF), strengthening social safety nets.

Officials say the investment is aimed at addressing skills gaps in the workforce while also improving support systems for low-income communities. The funding comes at a time when Tanzania is pushing forward with broader economic and social reforms.

The approval was confirmed during the 2026 IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, where Tanzanian leaders also engaged in discussions on additional priority projects, including infrastructure development such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

Overall, the funding highlights growing international confidence in Tanzania’s development strategy, with education, social protection, and infrastructure remaining central to the country’s long-term growth agenda.
