The United Nations General Assembly (UN) has voted in favour of a proposal to adopt a new map that more accurately reflects the actual size of Africa.

The resolution was supported by 164 countries, while the United States was the only country to vote against it, and six countries abstained.

The Mercator map, which has been used since the 16th century, has been criticised for making Africa appear similar in size to Greenland, despite Africa being approximately 14 times larger.
